Templates Or Custom Website Design? You Can Save Money

For most people who are building their very first website in an attempt to make money online, or just for fun, they choose one of those free content management systems and find a free template that they like. While this is great and all and it will still work, you need to ask yourself whether the free templates are worth the added hassles.

For starters, when you download one of those free templates, most of the times you will be required to leave a particular link on the template. Unfortunately, your website could be about fishing and that link may go to a prescription medications website which is definitely not good. Likewise, there is no real way of knowing just how many people are also using that same free template.

There are many good advantages to selecting premade templates for your website. While they may be used by many different websites and some of them may require you to keep their link on them, they are also very affordable and that is one of the biggest advantages to the premade templates. The developers quite often make them in groups which is why the cost is fairly low; in that they build a single layout and then modify it several times to create basically several completely unique designs. For a webmaster, saving every penny when you first build your website can be very important.

On the other hand, the custom made templates also come with some great advantages. While they do definitely cost more then the premade ones, they are completely unique and made exactly the way you want them to be. Think about how many times you have looked at a website and thought to yourself how a particular item would look a whole lot better in a slightly different location on the page. When you have a custom template made, you get to choose what goes where on your website.

However, while there are many reasons why one should have a custom template made for their website, there is also several reasons to just go with the premade templates. The biggest reason of all is of course the price. A premade template is a lot cheaper and there is a large collection of totally free templates to choose from. This equates to a lot of savings when you are just beginning to start your website. Besides, you can always change the template later on once you have established your website and begun to make money from it.

At the same time, you can also easily modify these templates to suit your particular needs. However, no matter how you choose to look at it, you will find time and time again that having a custom template developed specifically for your website and your website's visitors is the only real way to go. When you are fist developing your website, your goal needs to be content and nothing else. Later on you can focus on changing the template to a customized one.

Web Design Templates

The intention of web templates is to design a web site. Web design templates are used for separation of content from presentation in a web design and mass production of web documents. These collections of electronic files reside on one or more web servers to present content to the end user in the form of web pages. Studies have shown that web templates can grab interest of the first time user in only 10 seconds.

Web design templates are designed for professional and visual appeal. One can have a customized web design for a better reflection of the companies brand or for personal or commercial use.

Most of the web design templates created for commercial use, and should be appealing and luring to the visitors of the site. The web template should be stunning, innovative and ready to use. A spectacular web template will without doubt create an eye-catching home page that can almost grab the visitor by the collar and engross them on the site. However not all persons have the technical skills to create web design templates. For such people one can always ask a professional to make a customized web page at a certain cost.

For a minimal fee, one can own web design templates created by the best designers. These web templates are cost effective, unique, professionally designed, have functional web layouts, innovative, easy to customize with interfaces in Photoshop format. Other than purchasing the web templates, it is also possible to get free web design templates from the various websites that offer them. After purchase, the website can be used as one's own but there are rules pertaining to the terms of usage. To avoid copyright, one should have the link of the web designer on the home page. An amount can be paid not to have the designers' link on the home page.

After downloading the web design templates, one can replace all generic information that came with it and use their own to fit their profile or organization brand. The web templates are used to display personal information or day-to-day activities, to display information about an organization or company, displaying family history, a gallery of photos, to place music files or mp3 through the browser or to set up private login areas on-line.

Most of the successful web designs companies and other designers emphasize that the most important factor for creating web design templates is that it should offer original content to the readers in a way that will easily assist the search engine results. To be able to achieve this, web design templates should be interesting, in that they should attract viewers by adding quality and original content. Other ways are getting the brand right, keeping the home context short, easy linking pages, pictures to give enough emphasis; also, the size of the text especially on home page should be large enough to suit the web design layout. However, one is not limited to one design it is best to research on the content that one wants to use and even ask peers on the best way to create good web design templates.

Web Page Design Templates

Web page design templates come in all shapes and sizes, you can buy them one at a time or in large groups, you can even find free web page design templates on the internet. Whatever your reason, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

First and foremost, you must choose web page design templates that looks professional, nothing will doom your page more than to use a horrible looking template. Another thing to consider is this, if the web page template looks bad then chances are you will have issues when you try and use it.

One of the next things we need to consider is, how easy is it to manipulate. Depending on the type of HTML editor you are using the web page design templates you are trying to use could be very easy to work with or downright impossible. If you have a HTML editor like Dreamweaver or Design Dashboard and you know how to use them then you shouldn't have any problems with your web page design templates.

Before I go on lets talk about HTML editors, If you are new to web page design then I would highly recommend you start out with an HTML editor that provides step by step process to build your web page. The reason for this is quite simple, build a web page from scratch can be quite a daunting task, with a software program that walks you through the process step by step you will be able to spend more time on how your page looks instead of trying to fix HTML code.

For those that are more experienced building web pages then you already have the HTML editor that works for you and you're comfortable with. I wont reveal which ones I use in this article but I do have 3 different programs I use. One I use to create pages from scratch, one I use to fix web pages that are messed up and the third one I use is one of the step by step software programs I spoke of earlier, that I use for pages that are not overly involved, it allows me to take web page design templates and turn them into a professional looking web page in just a couple hours, it's a great time saver.

Back to web page design templates, consider the purpose for the templates before you jump on the internet and buy...are you using it for a Google AdSense page, or is it for a product or service you are selling, maybe it's just a simple home page for you and your family, whatever make sure you find the proper web page design templates to fit your needs.

For instance, if you are building Google AdSense pages then ones you see being promoted by the clan of internet marketers have more than likely been used by several thousand people already. So start you search a little bit deeper in the search pages to find web page design templates that others aren't using.

If you're building an entire web site to sell your product or service then you may want to have a professional build you a couple of web page design templates than you can modify easily. They are not to expensive and by going this route you almost certainly be guaranteed that your template is unique.

What decide when searching for you web page design templates make sure they are professional looking, will do what you want them to do and that you can easily work with them.

Free Web Design Template

The Internet is rapidly evolving and one of the reasons behind this is the evolution of the many websites that are hosted around the web. Web designs are becoming more eye-catching and innovative than ever that it is often difficult to know who exactly designed the template and if the person has the money to afford them.

The truth is, these people actually get a free web design template online that serves as their framework and then improve and personalize it from there. A template can save plenty of time creating graphics and constructing a layout that meets the current web and browser standards. There are four common places where you should be able to find at least one free.

Online Web Hosts

Online hosts understand that not everyone that use their services know how to design an attractive website. There are some online web hosts including the ones offering free plans that address the issue and offer free web design templates to choose from so the site creation process is much easier. Paid hosting services usually have a better selection of templates. One of the biggest advantages of using this source is that you can have your site hosted as soon as you choose your free web design template.

Online Template Sites

Online template sites are often the biggest sources for anyone looking for a free template because most of the sites get these templates from user submissions that agree to share these templates for free. Good online template sites categorize their templates so you can find which templates best suit the theme of the website. Many of the websites and blogs today get their templates from online template sites and the most active template sites get new templates each day or week.

Online Tutorial Sites

A good online tutorial can teach you how to create a free design template only if you have the required tools so be sure you gather some website designing software. So you need to equip yourself with your favorite web design editor so you can take full advantage of these tutorials. Creating a web design template is a great way to show uniqueness to your site as long you execute the design and code perfectly. You can even combine tutorials with your own creativity skills in creating a free web design template faster and more efficiently.

Online Site Builders

Online site builders are often the best choice for people that never made or used a free web design template before. This is because these site builders often hold users by the hand going through each step where the last step builds the entire webpage. The customization features may be limited, but there is simply no faster way in making a free web design template unless team works on the website.

It is recommended to try all these online services and see what service works best for you. Then when you are finished, you can edit the template to your own liking.

Quick, Effective Web Design: Templates?

When deciding on a web design it is important to know your competition. What do you like about there site? What could be done better? Are there certain aspects of the site that would appeal visually? Are there certain aspects of a competitor's site that have helped in organic SEO/SEM? Are there certain aspects/offers on a competitor's site that may draw people in? I think these are all important factors to keep in mind when visiting the competition in the pre-web design phase. However, this article is going to focus on another aspect: Namely, is there repetition in style amongst your competition? If you where starting a business to rival NetFlix & Blockbuster movie rentals online, you would immediately become aware that the two look very much identical except for the color scheme. In a similar respect, you may even find two websites using the exact same design in the same industry. Then you may find the exact same web design on a web design template site! This situation is the low point of template web design buying. If you decide to use a template (and I will argue that sometimes this is the way to go) you MUST KNOW YOUR COMPETITION!

If nothing else, template web design can spark ideas. There are many template sites out there like BoxedArt.com and TemplateMonster.com, and even a variety of free ones, with decent web site designs. When browsing through these sites it can be very helpful for sparking the idea in your head of what you may want your web design project to be like. Adversely, many of the templates found are also very generic to a certain point. There tends to be an overwhelmingly corporate feel to a high percentage of templates on the market. Not all web designs call for a corporate look but just simply need to look professional to gain credibility. Take aspects that work from different designs and merge them with the current identity you are looking for. Don't get carried away with this process though, if you take away a little from each one you may get a very disorienting look and feel to the site as each design may vary. Likewise, when I say take it is important to emphasize that I am not talking about stealing. These template designers have spent time and expect return, however if you find a font you like and match something as simple as this to a similar font that would fit in with your design then use the idea. Don't directly take images or color layouts. This browsing of templates for ideas is very much like browsing your competitor's websites for ideas and scoping the market.

If you are looking at purchasing a template make sure to follow these guidelines:

1. Know that your competitors are not using this template. If you are a national chain, you will probably not be reading this as you may very well have your own unique design team. For everyone else, how far does your competition boundary spread? If you own a local hot dog stand, you may only have a handful of competitors in your area that are branding themselves. Buying a template that can be purchased by the public even after you purchase it may be ok in this instance if the hot dog template is a great design. In this case it would be a perfect fit for a low priced design that may be high quality. If however you may run into multi-state or national competition for your product then you may opt against the generic template as a foundation to your design.

2. Make sure the template is only the foundation to your web design building. This may mean that you use the overall structure of the design, but change all the graphics to make the design more personalized. Often times this also means that you will change the color scheme to fit with your current identity or logo. Also, maybe only a portion of the template should be used. Does it have a great looking header or search box, but the rest of the site is left to be desired?

3. Always make sure to follow the guidelines of the company your purchase your web design template from. This is important as certain amount of "redesign" of the template is most likely expected in the user agreement.

Templates certainly are not for everyone, however when small business owners are just trying to get there feet wet online, a template may be the best choice. They are typically professional looking, well thought out (in many industry themes), require less knowledge to build from than a web design from scratch and most certainly more affordable than starting a web design from scratch.

As a side note: There are many web template sites out there that also sell limited download web design templates for a little more money. These are templates that once purchased a few or one time are taken from the template library and now longer available for purchase. These can keep branding in house and save time and money if the design is what you are looking for.

Why Use a Web Design Template?

What is a Website Template?

Many smart and savvy businesses are choosing to use a website template, and avoiding employing a professional designer. Why? Well, there are clear benefits: saving on cost, saving on time, and ensuring quality.

Web templates close the gap between the amateur website owner learning to create his/her own website, and a one-off custom design.

What is a website template? A web template is a ready-made design for your website, including images, some navigation, preferably several sample pages and in some cases Flash animation. However, it has no content related to you or your business - that must come from you! Remember that a web template must be customized / modified (to whatever degree you are comfortable with) to turn it into your very own website.

What about hiring a website designer, or using a quick-and-easy tool to build your own website?

The answer to this question is easy - your, and your business', professional image. There is no other way to say this - if you do not have appropriate web / Internet design experience, don't put together a quick and dirty website and expect it to be a professional portrayal of you / your business!

So then do you have to spend a lot of money having a website custom designed for you? Well, you could. But you no longer need to!

A low-cost, but professional design

While selecting a ready-made web design template, you will probably browse through a collection of different website designs until you find one (or a few) that you like.

Expect to be able to at least see a screen capture of what your web page will look like, and hopefully a "see-in-action"- which lets you see exactly what you will be getting.

Choose your template carefully, and you will have a professional design, executed by a qualified designer with all due attention to accessibility, standards compliance, browser quirks and a lot of other things that you would not want to have to learn about from scratch, yourself! All for a fraction of the cost of hiring a custom website designer or design firm.

Avoid the common mistakes made when choosing a website template

Don't assume that every last thing within the template can be changed, easily. Of course anything can be changed if you have graphics knowledge, but for the novice, if you're unsure whether a particular graphic used can be easily replaced by your own image, ask the template designer! This is why it is best to choose a template store where the template designer provides personal support for his / her designs.

Sometimes one or more elements of the template design are intrinsic parts of the template, and cannot just be "swapped out" without technical knowledge. Good, professional template designers will offer a customization service to perform this kind of function for you.

What a template is - and isn't

The website template you have chosen is a look-and-feel for your site. Some high-end templates have database back-ends and so on built in, but straightforward website templates are generally a "shell" for your website. Adding the content which is specific to your website, and "making it your own", involves editing the template.

Fortunately, these days html / web editors are very easy to use, but be aware that you will need to do add content to the template to make into your website.

You will want to add your own text, set your meta tags (keywords and description), and possibly insert some product images into your product listing pages (if applicable).

Not the only one!

Most website templates are sold more than once - which technically means that you won't have the only website on the Internet that looks like yours. However, don't consider this a problem - with Google having over 8 billion sites (May 2005) in its inde, the chances of someone seeing another site that looks like yours are tiny. However, if you need a copyrighted design, ask the template designer about buying the template for exclusive use. This will increase the price though, and also depends on the template not having been sold before.

Web site templates are a cost-effective way to produce an attractive, professional website at a fraction of the cost of hiring your own web designer.
